Fence Picket Texture (OTF)

As part of my development I have been wanting to improve on my texturing. Therefore I did the fence texture in Thax's film.

Before starting the texture in Adobe Photoshop I UV mapped the fence.

I then had a look at some images of weathered fences to get a good idea of what I wanted the texture to look like.




Thax wanted a white painted fence but I thought it would be good to make it look as though the paint is wearing away. I saw from the first reference image that the wood would have mold on it if it had been weathered.



This is the UV of the fence picket.


I started with a wood texture that I downloaded from cgtextures.com.


I then put this texture over my UV map. I duplicated the texture and used the clone stamp tool to stitch the textures together.


I wanted to have some mold stretching up from the bottom of the picket. So I found a leaking texture from cgtextures.com.

I then fit this onto the wood texture.

Here I set the mold layer to overlay. This meant that the grains of the wood could be seen through the mold.

For the paint I wanted to get a brush stroke look.


Therefore I found a brush stroke sample texture on cgtextures.com. I then selected one of the samples I liked and created a Photoshop brush from this texture.

I then used the brush to paint the picket. I left holes in the paint to make it look as thought the paint had started to peel away.

Here I set the paint layer to overlay so that the grains of the wood would come through.

Due to there being a car going past in the film and the road being quite dirty I thought it would be good to have some mud splattered on the fence. To do this I created a scatter brush.


This is a sample of the brush.

I set the colour of the brush to a brown and scattered it over the texture.

I then set the layer to multiply.



This is a test of the texture on the fence.

I am happy with this texture. I think I need to create some variations so that it isn't just the same texture for every picket. I also need the create the texture for the middle beams.
