Fixing Subsurface Scattering And Physical Sun And Sky Problem (OTF)

When putting the flowers and other foliage into the main layout with the physical sun and sky I found a problem with using the two together. What happens is the SSS (subsurface scattering) becomes extremely washed out.  These renders show the problem:

This is the foliage before I applied the physical sun and sky, using a spotlight with final gathering.

This is when I applied the physical sun and sky. It is very faint and washed out.

I did some research online and found a solution to the problem. Physical sun and sky uses indirect lighting and SSS materials do not take indirect lighting into account. Therefore I had to make the SSS materials work with indirect lighting.

What I had to do was go to the light map for the SSS material (misss_fast_lmap_maya). I then had to turn on the Include Indirect Lighting attribute.

The next part was to go the attributes of the SSS materials and go to the Algorithm Control tab. From there I had to turn off the Screen Composite attribute.

Now that this was fixed I could then render SSS materials with physical sun and sky.

This render shows the foliage after the problem was fixed. However, the SSS material setting now have to be changed because the foliage materials look a bit too over exposed.

This shows the foliage after the SSS materials have been edited.

I also took time to use the SSS material to get the translucent effect with the petals on the flowers.
